Electric vehicles are important in counteracting the potential catastrophic effects of global warming and climate change. Several companies in the country have already launched electric vehicles (EVs).


The central government and some state governments are already announcing various schemes to promote the car. A few things are challenging for the country before it fully enters Green Energy. And the most challenging is the Lithium Ion Battery for electric vehicles.


India is still lagging behind in manufacturing lithium ion batteries. Lithium ion batteries first came on the market about 26 years ago. Since then, small size light weight lithium ion batteries have become increasingly popular.





With the proliferation of smartphones, this battery has become more relevant. As the days go by the world wants to lean towards battery powered cars. And the only hope in that case is this lithium ion battery.


How long does the EV battery last once charged?


Most EVs run on the same battery that is attached to mobile phones and tablets - the Lithium Ion Cell. For a four-wheeler, these batteries usually need to be charged every 200-250 km Again, if the efficiency of the battery decreases, it has to be replaced.


A battery usually lasts 8-10 years The lifespan of the battery must depend on how much and how often the battery is recharged. Experts say that with almost all lead-acid batteries being recycled, the market for lithium-ion batteries is still in its infancy. And that is why the market for electric cars is not yet established.


Also, EV batteries are more complicated to handle, as they are larger and heavier than those used in cars running on petrol or diesel. These batteries are made up of hundreds of individual lithium-ion cells. So each one has to be dismantled separately and carefully, as it contains hazardous material which can explode if incorrectly separated.


Although most parts of the electric car can be reused. However, the battery has not been redesigned yet.


What happens to the EV battery when the lifetime is over?


There are three options: these can be discarded, broken down or reused to extract valuable materials. Of these, the first option would again pollute the environment.


Most of the components used in batteries can leak out and contaminate soil and groundwater. Which can have detrimental effects on the ecosystem and human health. Just because an EV battery doesn't work doesn't mean it's completely useless.


Experts point out that a discarded battery can withstand a lot of charging and discharging. This battery can be used in many things. Attempts are being made to find applications that can use this type of battery. Although there are many technical, economic challenges to overcome.


Environmentally and economically it is certainly a good option that EV batteries will be recycled. But there, at least for now, there is a discrepancy between purpose and implementation.


Experts widely believe that more than 5 percent of lithium ion batteries are currently not recyclable. The reason is, the investment required to build a recyclable plant or to increase the capacity of an existing plant.


How big will the EV recycling industry be?


It may seem that the time has not yet come to talk about EV batteries. Because the number of electric passenger cars in the world has reached only 10.2 million. Again, between 2010 and 2020. However, by the end of this decade, the International Energy Agency estimates that there will be about a quarter of a billion EVs on the road.


As the car grows, more lithium-ion batteries will grow, and this means more infrastructure is needed for recycling. According to French market research firm Yole Development, there will be more than 600,000 tons of lithium ion batteries by 2025 and up to 9 million tons per year by 2040.


A small portion of the lithium-ion battery is recycled and the rest is discarded. It states that the EV battery recycling market in 2019 was about 93,600 tons. But by 2015, it will increase to more than 450,000 tons.


The total value of the current raw material in lithium ion batteries is now about US  921 million. Eol said it would be  1.9 billion by 2025 and more than  25 billion by 2040. Eole added that the value of the raw materials in these batteries, which today stands at about  315 million, will reach  23 billion by 2040.


Why is it reasonable to recycle EV batteries?


The most important components in making lithium ion batteries are hard to find and therefore expensive. Also, as noted by the World Economic Forum, mining of materials raises ethical and environmental concerns. So batteries should be recycled as much as possible. And this is where the opportunity comes in.
